A Letter from Aleli
In May ‘07 I was told I needed a kidney transplant.  I simply said ‘alrighty’ as if it was the most common operation in the world.  A few minutes later I started crying, worries hit me. ‘Where would I get a kidney?  How long would it take to get the procedure done? the cost?  Can I still have a baby? My mum and my dad would worry to death.  My fiancé wouldn’t like it!’

The next 4 months was spent organizing the transplant, daily trips to the hospital, a thousand blood tests, x-rays, dialyses, disappointment, frustration, depression, etc etc etc.  I was soooo very sick, it was endless and I was going to die.

Today, September 08, ‘09, I am celebrating my 2nd birthday.  I would like to thank so very much my brother Arnold who lovingly gave me half of his life so I could live mine, my parents who spent sleepless nights worrying about me, my dear friends (won’t name them as there were so many I might miss to mention one) who were very supportive, and  Neil who even for a moment has never left me.    Most especially, I am so very thankful to all my doctors, Drs. Amante, Ejercito, Ninalga, Alcantara and the rest of the Kidney Transplant Team of Capitol Medical Center, Philippines, who did everything to give me this new life.

A Letter from Shaikha

Dear All,

It is undeniable that a patient becomes afraid of things he cannot understand, and instead of trying to learn more about his ailment, fighting and running away from the truth becomes more convenient.

I was eleven years old when I started to get sick leading to the deterioration of my kidney function. For seven years, life went normally as I did not need dialysis. When kidney transplant was suggested, I took it as a normal kind of treatment like taking medicines for a sickness. Unfortunately, my country lacked the expertise to do this procedure and also, donation was not allowed by our culture. I was sent to have a kidney transplant in another country. We were not told of the benefits of receiving an organ from a relative so I went to an Asian country in 1998 for my first kidney transplant. Thank God, my transplant was successful despite the fact that I did not get the care I deserved for the amount of money I paid, so the moment I felt better to get out of bed, I left the hospital in a jiffy. While I paid a certain amount for my kidney, I consider this donation as very precious and priceless that no money cannot ever pay. Deep in my heart, I know I will be forever be in debt to this person for saving my life.
